I wanted to take a moment to really think about what Memorial Day stands for me.
My father, Lon Oliver Ghaster, is a proud U.S. Marine. He is a living legend as one of the very few survivors of the first wave of Iwo Jima.
He was one of the brave men who landed on the island, fought for our freedom and impacted the course of history by helping the United States to win this critical battle. Those of us who have never been in battle can not possibly understand the trauma and fear that a soldier goes through or the selfless sacrifice that they make for those of us HERE AT HOME. Freedom is not free and how quickly we can forget this while sitting in our comfortable homes in our comfortable lives.
My dad taught me many things and instilled values in me that I apply to my business. Integrity, honesty, discipline, hard work, sacrifice, honor, faithfulness and serving others are all core values to Ghaster Painting and Coatings.
Please remember to take some time on Memorial Day to truly honor the men and women who are and have served in this nation's military. Some ways you can do this are: visit a cemetery and place flowers on the grave of a veteran, visit a veteran's memorial, pray for the safety and protection of our troops, or have a time of silence. If you have a veteran in your family, please honor them!
Have you ever really listened the words of the memorial bugle song "Taps"? I hadn't. They are very appropriate to share with you on the eve of this holiday. Have a safe and memorable weekend. Semper Fi, Dad.
Day is done Gone the sun From the lakes From the hills From the sky. All is well, Safely rest. God is nigh.
Dims the sight
And a star
Gems the sky,
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.
