When millions of people visit the hospital each year to get treatment and medical attention, the last thing they think they will get is a staph infection.  Unfortunately, what many patients are finding out is that the risk of staph infection is very high in healthcare settings. ABC News describes the significant problem, “As many as 1.2 million U.S. hospital patients may be infected each year with a virulent staph infection that’s resistant to antibiotics — a rate almost 10 times greater than previous estimates, a new study finds. The research, conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, also found that as many as 119,000 hospital patients each year may die from the tough-to-treat strain of bacterium, called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The germ is spread by touch and can lead to dangerous skin infections, blood infections and pneumonia.”

Many hospitals are taking every precaution to prevent the spread of infection and now Sherwin-Williams has made a significant advancement that can help stop the spread of infection.   Painting Pro Times elaborates on Sherwin-Williams new product, Paint Shield®, “Paint Shield® is the only EPA-registered paint that kills greater than 99.9 percent of Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), MRSA, E. coli, VRE, and Enterobacter aerogenes within two hours of exposure on a painted surface.

Paint Shield®, the first EPA-registered microbicidal paint that kills greater than 99.9 percent of Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), E. coli (Escherichia coli), VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis) and Enterobacter aerogenes on painted surfaces, offers customers an important new tool to help prevent the spread of these harmful bacteria on the painted surface.

Paint Shield doesn’t just inhibit the growth of common microbes, it actually has the power to kill these bacteria within two hours of exposure, and continues to kill 90 percent of bacteria even after repeated contamination, for up to four years when the integrity of the surface is maintained.

“Paint Shield is a game-changer in the coatings industry and represents a major breakthrough in technology,” said Steve Revnew, senior vice president of product innovation, Sherwin-Williams. ”Importantly, it not only helps prevent the spread of these harmful bacteria on the painted surface, but it also features all the appearance and qualities our customers seek and expect from Sherwin-Williams.”

Featuring quality coating performance, great hide and durability, Paint Shield is now available in more than 3,300 Sherwin-Williams stores in 550 colors and comes in the popular eg-shel finish. Paint Shield can be applied on interior hard, non-porous ceilings, walls, doors and trim. It is ideal for a variety of settings from healthcare, education and hospitality to residential housing and more.

The exclusive patented technology in Paint Shield represents the culmination of extensive research and collaboration between Sherwin-Williams coatings scientists and expert microbiologists. Learn more about Paint Shield and its breakthrough technology at SWPaintShield.com.”
